Water Effects: Immersive Theater Brings New Dimension to Porn
It is no secret that Amsterdam is the world’s capital for government-sanctioned paid sex.
Amsterdam’s Red Light areas are internationally renowned for the variety of sex and sex attractions publicly available, including the long chains of one-room cabins showcasing window prostitutes, the large number of marijuana-friendly coffeeshops and bars – including one that infamously features bananas – and several sex museums. In recent years however, the Amsterdam government has sought to gentrify its global image by introducing rules to limit tourist groups from entering the areas and shrinking the size of the zoned districts.
One new theater is seeking to give these efforts the middle finger. A new sex theater in Amsterdam offers a “5D” immersive viewing experience to porn watchers, complete with moving chairs, strobe lights, bubble machines, a 3D projector and water effects.
That’s right. Water effects.
The new theater, called “5D Porn” because it seeks to engage all five senses, is small, currently seating about twelve in a single screen theater.
The six-minute movie, which costs €12.50 (US $14.11) to view, is meant to be funny and sexy. The film is made specifically for the theater and is meant to sell the experience, like an amusement park ride.
“The movie is about a guy who comes to Amsterdam and experiences the Red Light District in a very funny, sexy way,” theater owner Natalie told MailOnline Travel about the currently-shown movie. “For example he has a visit to the famous bananenbar, he will visit the windows, he will be having sex in a bubble bath and so on. There is a lot of humour in the movie. We noticed that women also really like it. It is not about guys going inside to do ‘their’ thing.”
“It is really a 2.0 experience. Everybody looking for sex combined with a big laugh will be happy to come here,” she continued.
Despite the stated desire to appeal to all five senses, scent is not a major sensation that the theater seeks to trigger. As explained by Dutch porn star Kim Holland, a principal in the project, smell is too subjective. While the smell of semen may appeal to some, it may be vomit-inducing to other.
Despite this, for the currently-presented film, flower-scented bubbles floats from the emitter in front of the seat. The seats rock and move in rhythm to the motion on the screen, a water-like substance squirts the viewers’ face suggestively and strobe lights flash to enhance the watching experience.
“5D Porn” is seeking to cash-in on the growth of 4D movie theaters, which combines 3D movies with physical effects like rain, lightning, bubbles, fragrances and motion-enabled seats that may have actuators, leg and arm massagers and water sprays equipped. A take on immersive amusement rides like Disney’s “Captain Eo,” 4D theaters are branded as 4DX, D-Box, MX4D and Super 4D and are operating in 268 theaters in 41 countries.
The first porn 4D movie, “Sex and Zen: Slayer of a Thousand from the Mysterious East,” opened in China in 2012. At the time, the physical interaction was limited to a vibrating chair. The idea, however, failed to take off. With the growth of virtual reality porn however, “5D Porn” may be the first in a new line of sex attractions for those wishing to do more than just watch porn.
