Viva La Salina! YP2003 Wrap-Up
As I was waking up PSWBilling Matt early Thursday morning last week, I couldn’t help but be full of nervous anticipation for the upcoming YP2003. I guess anyone would be nervous when they are bringing over 80 people from all over the planet to a third world country for an extended weekend of networking and relaxation. I envisioned the primitive conditions down in La Salina, Mexico, and some real potential for a few people who are used to better conditions. My email to all attendees regularly stated “Its NO resort… be prepared.” But I still couldn’t help but worry about the comfort level of the individuals, and the potential for disaster in the planning and events. I laughed to myself as I remembered the first YP; we had no beds, no towels, and no blankets… pretty much just a big house with people sleeping in their clothes to stay warm. THAT was a GREAT-time-had-by-all!! This year though, we had some big time sponsors, and some people flying in from as far away as Denmark.
What many people may also not realize is that in Mexico, there is another time measuring frame… called (according to Tucker from Falcon Foto) MST, or Mexico Standard Time. MST stretches time to make it almost stand still. You absolutely cannot be in a hurry down there for anything, or you will become very impatient and disappointed. While it isn’t as slow as JST (Jamaica Standard Time), it still takes a bit longer for service and food. You need to be just as prepared for this, as you do the conditions, and if you can accept this, you will have a fantastic experience at the YP.
Now that the disclaimer has been stated, the weekend started out great! Matt and I packed the van, picked up a few more peeps, including AdultLegal Jim, Platinum, ContentGuys Derek, JFK, and Softfocus Patric. As we headed over the border at about 10:00 a.m., the sun was starting to burn off the morning coastal fog, and the traffic was minimal. We arrived in La Salina without any mishaps and I started handing out the house keys as the people started to arrive. The big event, Thursday night, was sponsored by PornProfit, who were strongly represented by Sherie, Tera, and my new best friend, George. They sponsored a carne asada (steak) BBQ on the beach deck at the Tucker House of Love.
The carne asada tacos filled the air with a delicious aroma of spices and smoked mesquite. The fresh, homemade tortillas, salsas, and ass-kicking margaritas were complimented by a priceless view off the deck of the Pacific Ocean crashing into three miles of white sandy beaches. Only one suggestion I would have here: don’t try to open a bottle of Corona with another bottle (inside joke). PornProfit really kicked off the weekend with some of the best tacos and margaritas I have ever had in my 20 years of exploring Baja.
Thursday night carried over into Friday morning, and then Friday afternoon. I took a group of about ten Webmasters to a small town called La Mision, where we had authentic homemade chorizo (spicy sausage), huevos (eggs), and machaca. All of this was freshly prepared in the house kitchen we were eating in. Delicious! The dirt road back was an adventure enough as well, with full views from the cliffs overlooking the ocean and long-stretching valleys. The view here reminded me of what it would look like if the Grand Canyon ran into the Pacific Ocean.
Friday afternoon, the tequila zombies awoke and most all of us managed to make it to nearby Puerto Nuevo. Puerto Nuevo used to be a small fishing village named after a standing billboard surfers would use for directions to find the delicious lobsters served here. Puerto Nuevo translated into English is “New Port,” thus the billboard was for “Newport cigarettes”. Unofficially, and unarguably the “Lobster Capital of the World”, Puerto Nuevo now has over 50 different lobster restaurants, and I can imagine feeds over 10,000 of these delicious crustaceans to tourists every weekend. They served up over 100 lobsters just for our group. Again, all served with fresh tortillas, rice, beans, and of course, a complimentary margarita. The price for this exorbitant lunch was only $13 per person. I am convinced Puerto Nuevo should be one of the wonders of the world.
After lunch was shopping for various Mexican wares of silver, blankets, pictures, hammocks or potting plants. All I wanted to do was chill on the beach so we rallied the troops and headed back to La Salina. After all this food, I know why taking a “siesta” (nap) is a national tradition. Friday afternoon was spent on the beach, networking and getting to know all the people.
Friday night found us at one of the most beautiful restaurants in the world, La Fonda. La Fonda has been written about by many romantic authors, who find its cliff side dining, quaint Spanish décor, and unbelievable food, to be the true “Spanish fly.” This dinner was sponsored by Epoch Processing. They laid down quite a pretty penny for all 70+ of us to enjoy not only the fresh lobster, filet mignon, and fresh shrimp, but also the beverages of the local land… tequila, and plenty of it. The night was cool, the company was fantastic, and the dinner was outrageous. Hard to believe that this little place was able to put out all those dishes from one small kitchen! I didn’t even think they would have enough plates. La Fonda was definitely a dinner to remember, and a location for all romantics in northern Baja. Thank you very much, Jeff, and everyone at Epoch!
It’s Saturday already? Damn, I wish I had thought of a sponsor for the sunshine, because it had been cool and cloudy at the beach until then. Anyway, Saturday afternoon was time for the traffic seminars, so we loaded up the vans and took everyone to Rosarito for a hell-raising good time. Rock and Roll Taco was RAGING, beers were flowing, margaritas were (literally) flying, and a few of our group decided to show the locals their underwear and nipples. Great time had by ALL!! Rosarito is a beach town that boasts college-age raging bars such as Papas-N-Beer (over $250K a day in door revenues alone), and Iggys. There are only two reasons why you would go to Rosarito… to party and to find a fuck partner. SoCalCash picked up the tab here and everyone had a rip-roaring good time! Thank God for those PSWBilling vans to get us back to La Salina.
The sunshine finally broke through late Saturday afternoon and the Tucker House of Love was full of lesbian photo shoot action, and living up to its namesake. The beach was turning into a drag strip for four-wheelers, and the attendees of YP2003 were showing no signs of slowing down. After an afternoon of fun and jocularity it was time to turn it up a notch. We all found ourselves at the Palapa de Jose for the famous pig roast. Adult.com sponsored this event, and ToolGuy made sure it was a kick-ass event. I had to get back to town and help the band set up, but from what I hear, the food was delicious, and the location was beautiful. Thank you Lensman, and Adult.com for helping out some hungry (how… I have no idea) Webmasters with their Saturday dinner.
My favorite surf band is called RockFish. If you like the sounds of Dick Dale, Beach Boys or Jan and Dean, then think of their tunes and turn it up a notch. RockFish set up on the deck of Tucker’s house and tore the night UP! The dinner crowd came back from dinner, were listening to the band, and Tucker and I decided to give the gang an old-fashioned fireworks display. SeaWorld on the 4th of July had nothing on our display. Firebombs, rockets red glare, and glass-shaking showers of light were blowing up the beach. Sorry about that burn, Tucker, but it was a quick fuse… ahahahaa. RockFish continued the show, ice cold cervezas kept everyone warm, and then there was “the wedding.”
Yep, what would YP be without something “special” happening. So we had a real wedding on the deck, overlooking the beach, with yours truly presiding as Reverend Bob. The lucky couple, Kristin and Chris from MonsterCockProject were wed with a full crowd of admiring Webmasters, a beautiful flower girl (Gail Harris from Falcon Foto), and a strapping, handsome ring bearer, Jason Tucker. RockFish boomed out their surf version of the wedding march as Kristin’s “father”, Rochard from LightspeedCash, led her down the aisle. The ceremony went off beautifully with a few tears of joy, and an unforgettable strip tease dance from the incomparable Uncle Willie (oh man, nice ass?).
Sunday was full of sunshine as everyone just chilled out at the cantina and soaked up the sun. We lost a few wayward defeated Webmasters early Sunday for the trip back to San Diego, but for the most part, we had over 65 still standing. These people would be very grateful for staying the duration, because Sunday night we had dinner at Bobby’s on the Cliffs. Bobby, who reminds me of an original Bronx Bomber, cooked up fresh Italian food for all of us. Some people were a bit hungry and anxious for the food, but remember, its MST (see above). When the pasta and salads finally came out, everyone was ecstatic. Bobby had his band playing, and it was a memorable night. GoodthinxxCash was nice enough to sponsor this dinner, and it was a great ending to a fantastic week. We even received a tear-jerking going away poem from Uncle Willie.
While it may sound like this was only a weekend of culinary delights and tequila tasting, the underlying theme of networking was prevalent. I personally made several great business deals, and know of quite a few more. But it was more than that! It was about getting away with old and new friends, and experiencing some unforgettable times. The people who all went were fantastic sports about everything, the weather, the accommodations, and the MST. Kristin, who helped me organize the entire event, was invaluable to me. I actually was able to relax a bit as well. I met new Webmasters, Webmasters I knew but never met, and old friends valuable to me. Nobody got arrested, hurt, or pregnant (that we know of). The sponsors all were VERY generous in their donations to make sure all of our “vacation” was well taken care of. Name another industry you can find people paying for all your food in order for you to have a better time! If I could change one thing, as I said before, I would have had a sponsor for the weather. Unfortunately only Mother Nature can control that, and she hasn’t gotten back to me yet on a price. She did say she would be interested for the YP2003.5.
