Turkish Cyber Moralists Temporarily Commandeer RedTube.com
CYBERSPACE — While the Department of Homeland Security uses the specter of Middle Eastern cyber terrorism as one of many excuses to justify this May’s launch of the Real ID program, one popular porn site has already felt the sting of hackers from the transcontinental nation of Turkey keen to see their version of morality forcibly imposed upon the internet.Calling itself the “Hacked Netdevilz,” a self-proclaimed “Turkisy cyber-terrorist” group temporarily brought RedTube.com to its metaphorical knees, removing its usual content and replacing it with the words “No porn! We’re not the first but we’re the best.”
With more than four million visitors during January alone, RedTube.com is believed to be one of the top 100 most visited websites, making it an excellent target for the presumably morality based cyber scare squad.
After transferring to another server, the site was able to re-launch and get back to business, but its tech crew is busily reviewing site logs in the hopes of determining how the hackers broke through the security features and gained access. Additionally, whether the security vulnerability is one shared by other web 2.0 sites is also being investigated.
Much like YouTube, only far more explicit, RedTube hosts user-submitted video content.
