The Most Often-misspelled Porn Search Term in America
Each month, Pornhub — arguably the world’s most-visited adult website — rolls out an infographic of some sort based on its server statistics. Hip mainstream media hop all over the eye candy, analyzing and reanalyzing what the numbers may indicate about modern society. Predictably, the answer is always the same: People like porn.
Yes, it’s that simple.
This month, the number-crunchers at Pornhub churned out a gem that is remarkable for both its timing and its sheer absurdity.
Inspired by U.S. President Donald’s Trump’s now-immortal “covfefe” (and hopefully not the Scripps National Spelling Bee taking place during the same week) Pornhub sifted through its mountains of data in search of the most misspelled search terms. The statistical minds over there were even good enough to break down the results by state.
What emerged may indicate any of several things, the most likely of which are 1) as a rule, Americans are terrible spellers and 2) it’s tremendously difficult to type with one thumb while doing something else with the hand on which the other is located.
It’s pretty clear what terms the searchers intended to type: “lesbian,” “hentai,” “amateur,” etc. Everyone makes mistakes, and porn-watchers in most states should be forgiven their little spelling peccadilloes.
The most frequent spelling error in one-third of U.S. states is utterly confounding, though: Porm.
WTF? According to Pornhub’s stats, not only were people in so-called “coastal elite” states like California, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut — presumably some of the most well-educated among Americans — apparently searching for the term “porn” on a porn site, but they also misspelled a word staring them in the face while they typed.
Pornhub. It’s right there in black and white and orange at the top of the page.
Covfefe may live in infamy, but it won’t reside there all by itself.
