The Dino Diaries – Part Five

Marketing 101
I must admit YNOTMASTERS has a lot of great articles on how to market your adult Web site. There are even rules for marketing depending on niche, demographic, pricing, offering, service category and so on. As a matter of fact, there is so much information out there that you could honestly get lost trying to figure out what will work for you or what won’t work for you.
After a good conversation with YNOT Bob, I’ve come to a clear and concise understanding of what marketing is all about, and honestly, it’s quite simple if you think about it. Bob breaks down marketing to a philosophical approach. It goes a little something like this:
Jump In – Start marketing as soon as you know what you want to do and how you’ll be doing it.
Knowledge – Become a leader in your field. Know what you’re talking about, and share your wealth of knowledge as often as possible.
Networking – Meet as many people wherever/whenever there is an opportunity.
Honesty – Realize that you have to be honest, and every person you meet can open another door for you.
Basically it all comes down to reputation on the Internet. If you don’t have a reputation, you don’t have a good business.
This advice is good ammunition for getting started and staying on track. However, you need some tangible marketing collateral (i.e. banner ads, buttons, newsletters, etc.) as well.
Enlarge My Penis… Again?
Speaking of marketing, what the hell is going on with all the spam I’m getting? I don’t know about you, but I’ve been receiving over 20 spam messages per day from people that tell me I opted in for their newsletter or product information or penis enlargement pills alone. Personally, if I get spam from you and you tell me that I opted in for your crap (and I know I didn’t), not only does it make me mad, but I can tell you that I’d never buy anything from you… EVER. I’m almost tempted to grab each one of their e-mail headers and business names and post them on some “don’t use these guys” message board.
Taxation Without Representation
In one of my previous diaries I wrote about the fact that Xavier, our CFO, recently resigned due to a conflict of interests between his new bride and the adult industry. Well, this predicament leaves me in a very precarious position. You see, in every business I’ve ever started, I’ve been the business development guy, the sales guy, or the tech guy. Now I have to be the finance guy, and I don’t have the time. So as tax season came and went, I was furiously putting together the MD 500 form, the Federal tax forms and all the other “stuff” that had to be done by April 15th. Well, needless to say, I had to file for an extension and even with that I barely made it.
So, I’m now on a quest for an outside accountant. Just what every growing business needs! I know I’ll be looking at several articles here on YNOT before I make my decision, however I do know that I want to use someone local (I live in Maryland) – someone that I can go visit, and talk with. If any of you have good advice AND IT’S NOT SPAM, please e-mail me at the address below.
Well, that’s it for now. I’m off to go work on some new projects that came in for SiteAlien.
