The Devil in The New York Times
NEW YORK – Porn may well have come of age in the eyes of the mainstream now that The New York Times has reviewed “The New Devil in Miss Jones” in its Sunday Arts and Leisure section. In a sneak preview titled “The Devil Is Still In,” writer Mireya Navarro interviewed a number of people involved with the project, including: director Paul Thomas; Vivid Girl and star of the new show, Savanna Samson; original 1973 Miss Jones superstar, Georgina Spelvin, who has a cameo on the latest remake; and Vivid co-founder/co-chairman, Steven Hirsch.
According to the article, Hirsch is expecting big sales on the latest entry in the Miss Jones video legacy, possibly ten times greater than average Vivid releases. “It’s a name that everybody knows,” he pointed out. “It’s a compelling story. The story is updated, but it still pays homage to the original.”
The original Gerard Damiano film possessed a stunningly serious story line, but not the kind of sex that today’s viewers might consider hot, something that remake director Thomas readily admitted to Navarro. “The aesthetics of such films had changed over the last 30 years, and not entirely for the better. If the original came out today, I think the sex would be found lacking,” according to Thomas, responding to actress Samson’s confession that she spent most of the time she watched the original with her finger on the fast-forward button.
If all goes according to plan, viewers will be less likely to scan through the newest version of the classic. Along with a more modern approach to sex, the Devil will be portrayed by porn super sensation Jenna Jameson. The DVD goes on sale simultaneously in the United States and Europe on September 21 and will include a billboard in Times Square, a release party in New York City, and five language options for non-English speakers.
