Teens Using Phones for – What Else? – Documenting Sex
AUSTRALIA — Australian teens are using their mobile phones in ways their parents almost certainly wouldn’t approve of: to document and share sexual experiences. On September 22nd, Australian network ABC2 began airing a 10-part series that investigates the lives of young people. Award-winning journalist Steve Cannane, who hosts the programs, said he was “blown away” to discover how frequently Aussie teens use their mobiles to share homemade porn.
“We went down to the back of Town Hall steps and the first guy I went up to, a teenager, I said ‘do you have porn on your phone?’ ‘Yes.’ Bang, straight away, [he] shows it to me,” Cannane told The Age. “And it’s a guy getting a blow job in the park across the road from the tech he studies at. And so that has been sent around to all his friends.”
Cannane said almost all of the 30 teens with whom he and his crew spoke had some sort of porn on their phones.
“[The teenagers] were talking about how it was a bit of an issue in schools because people might film each other doing sex acts and the boys will send it around to brag,” he told The Age.
“There’s almost a form of one-upmanship going on: Who can come up with the most extreme, most revolting, most out-there piece of porn on their phone and go, ‘hey look at this.’ Previously they would talk about it, whereas now they can show evidence of it.”
The teens-and-porn episode will air on The Hack Half Hour in mid-October.
