Target To Match Wal-Mart’s Cheap Birth Control Pill Price
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Corporate conglomerate Target has decided to match competitor Wal-Mart’s new, slashed price on one of the most-commonly prescribed birth control pills available in pharmacies.Target will be offering the generic of Ortho-Cyclen and Ortho-Tricyclen — Sprintec and Tri-Sprintec — for $9.00 for a 30 day supply. The pill pack normally costs between $24 and $31 at most pharmacies and Planned Parenthood clinics.
Wal-mart made the price cut late last month in what was seen as an effort to lure women in their twenties — the age group most commonly prescribed Sprintec and Tri-Sprintec — into the discount chain.
“We will be matching them [Wal-Mart] on the same items and quantities,” Target company spokesperson Brie Heath told the local media.
Unfortunately, laws in nine states may keep some customers from being able to take advantage of the new, cheaper prices. A pricing quirk in Target’s home state stems from a Depression-era law that makes it a misdemeanor for retailers to sell merchandise for less than its true cost. The intent was to protect small retailers from competition from large chain stores that could, in theory, dramatically cut costs in the short run to drive out competitors and then inflate prices. However, that’s not what is happening with this case, so Minnesota lawmakers are introducing legislation to exempt pharmaceuticals from the law’s enforcement.
