Survey: Most Consumers Still Pay for Porn
YNOT – A majority of adult content consumers obtain their porn fixes legally, and many of them prefer pre-recorded content to live cam shows. Those are among the conclusions XCritic and Vivid Entertainment drew from the results of a recent “Sex Tracker” survey on which the companies collaborated.
According to the survey, more than 50 percent of adult content consumers still pay to watch porn. Thirty-three percent of them buy DVDs either instead of or in addition to online material. That’s slightly more than the 31.7 percent of respondents who admitted to spending quality time on porn tubes sites.
“With all the talk of piracy and tube sites, the majority of consumers out there still wants to get their adult entertainment legally and is more than willing to pay for it,” said Christopher Thorne, editor of the adult e-zine XCritic.
More than 400 people responded to the survey, which revealed other statistics about adult entertainment consumption, as well. The majority of respondents who watch porn (51.7 percent) do so alone and while masturbating. A quarter of the respondents (24.3 percent) indicated they watch porn movies alone simply for entertainment, while 23.5 percent said they watch with a significant other.
Survey respondents also indicated they like feature-style movies with strong storylines (20.5 percent), sex only (19.5 percent) or gonzo-extreme sex (12.9 percent). The relatively new “porn parody” genre already has attracted a following of 9.4 percent of porn watchers, according to the survey. Threesomes remain a favorite subject, and the survey indicated the combination of two women and one man is by far the most popular threesome configuration (62 percent), followed by two men and a woman (25.7 percent).
The survey was conducted during February among visitors to XCritic.com. Most of the respondents were male, but 3.9 percent were women; 86.4 percent of all respondents were between the ages of 18 and 50.
Asked about their opinion of cam shows, 17.8 percent of respondents indicated they didn’t know the term, while 38.3 percent said they do not enjoy cam shows and 23.4 percent said they only watch live online entertainment occasionally or rarely. Another 16.9 percent said they watch the “free preview and that’s it.”
“The results are a fascinating snapshot of the preferences of visitors to our site,” Thorne said. “There’s a lot of speculation about what consumers want and don’t want and how they consume their entertainment. It’s great to see real, hard data to show what’s really going on out there.”
