Survey: 1/3 of American Adults Hooked on Celeb Sex Tapes
YNOT – Despite the frequently decried negative impact of America’s “celebrity culture,” a new study commissioned by adult products retailer Adam & Eve has determined about one-third of American adults have watched a celebrity sex tape.
Pamela Anderson, Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Kendra Wilkinson … the list goes on and on with no end in sight. The American public seems unable to resist the lure. At least one major adult entertainment studio has found celebrity sex tapes to be a significant source of revenue, and a former adult industry insider earned the title “Sex Tape King” by brokering deals for a number of Hollywood hotshots.
While 66 percent of the survey’s respondents said they have not watched the glitterati get it on and one percent refused to answer the question, the number who admitted to viewing entries in the genre of adult entertainment is significant, according to Adam & Eve’s resident sex expert.
“We all have curiosities about sex, and we all have curiosities about celebrities,” said Dr. Kat Van Kirk. “When you put those two together, it creates a lot of intrigue.”
The tapes actually may have a positive impact, she opined.
“Of course, celebrities aren’t doing anything different from what you or I do; they’re just doing it in front of the camera,” Van Kirk said. “For some couples, seeing someone they would not expect [to see] enjoying sex can open up communication or acceptance for certain acts.”
The web-based survey, conducted by an independent third-party survey company, collected responses from more than 1,000 American adults age 18 and up. The results bear out something Adam & Eve Director of Marketing Chad Davis said the company already had noticed.
“Adam & Eve has seen huge sales in the celebrity DVD market,” he said. “From mild to wild, we have something for everyone’s taste and comfort level.”
