Strip! The Msical – An Interactive World Premire
Austin, Texas – Amparo Garcia-Crow, a multi-disciplinary artist from Texas, has announced the Austin world premiere of her original musical STRIP, showing the week of January 23-29, 2018 at the The Austin Film Society’s Event Hall at the Marchesa. The show features local luminaries Jolie Goodnight, Feliz Dia MacDonald and Isaac Garza in the leads and a special appearance by Alejandro Rose-Garcia (Shakey Graves).
STRIP was originally developed by Amparo Garcia-Crow as an Artist-in-Residence with the NYC avant-garde theater company Mabou Mines, with Los Angeles composer Arthur Shane. With an outpouring of community support and a dedicated cast and crew, her work will finally come to life, transforming a vast empty performance space into a den of storytelling that takes the audience into a variety of music venues, stand-up comedy clubs and burlesque houses in mid-century New York, Paris, and Texas.
STRIP reveals the “naked truth” behind the true stories of three iconic performers – Lenny Bruce, Josephine Baker and Candy Barr – presenting them together as one heroic tale, and a timely exploration of sexual taboos, freedom of speech and the power of ‘femininity’. Garcia-Crow describes the musical as “‘Our Town’ meets ‘Godspell’ at the ‘Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.'”
Garcia-Crow’s son Alejandro Rose-Garcia, also known by his musical persona Shakey Graves, has helped in the production process and will welcome audiences nightly to STRIP. “She’s not just my mama, she’s one of the most talented people I know,” he says. “She makes it easy on me, because it’s always incredible work.”
