George’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to: marketing, creative direction, and public relations.
He states, “I am 100% WEBMASTER. If a designer is sick, I can jump in and hold my own with the best of them.” In addition, he is also familiar with programming. With his expertise being in traffic, whether it is pay sites, free sites, search engines, circle-jerk sites or mailers, George has done it all. This week we are going to meet the man behind the man and get inside his head. No, not that one…
YNOT NEWS: Hey George! Wow, you really are a jack-of-all-trades, and even a master of some as well it seems. What is your background in the adult industry?
George: I started in Lake Tahoe with Xpics Publishing (1996-1999), and then moved on to CelebDollars (1999-2001), MatrixDollars (2001), DrunkDollars (2000-2002), PornProfit (2002-2003), and THE LAST PLACE BEFORE I DIE: Guerillatraffic.com (current).
YNOT NEWS: Well, here’s hoping you live a long life then! What type of work were you doing pre-1996?
George: I have done it ALL. I started out as a DJ in a strip club. Not long after that I had an escort service with over 30 girls in my steed. I dabbled in 900 numbers and mail order (from my one-bedroom apartment), snow plowing, roofing, and I also dabbled in pagers. My last “real” job was bartending, which I sometimes miss!
YNOT NEWS: You were very outspoken at the last Cybernet Expo on the panel regarding spam, shaving and theft. I’d like to pick your brain a bit here and ask you some sales and traffic questions given that you are one who boldly speaks his mind. Should sales people, their chat names and their personal contacts be their own property or the property of the company they work for?
George: My opinion is this… if someone new to the business comes to work for a company and that same company spends money on building up that person’s personality, then yes, it should be the property of the company. New sales people are an investment. Since they do not know the business, there is a learning curve that takes place. I like to call it the, “Earn While You Learn Program.” New sales people are often enthusiastic and very outgoing.
The downside is that they make careless errors and use a lot of the company’s resources to cover up their “newbieness” and do damage control. So if I invest in this person by buying business cards, taking them to shows, paying them to chat, paying them to post on message boards, then I think their profiles are an asset of the company. [Editor’s Note: By law, it IS the property of the company and not of the employee.]
For example, a company like PlatinumBucks was very smart in making previous employee Becky, PlatinumBecky. It doesn’t matter what company she works for now, I will ALWAYS think of her and call her PlatinumBecky. Any new sales person under me will be known as “your-name-here-GUERILLA”. If I hire experienced people like another Tera or Sherie, and they have an established “profile”, then this issue gets very controversial. I want their old contacts, but I doubt they would agree to hand over an ICQ username and password because they spent so long building their personalities.
YNOT NEWS: Can you elaborate on a recent instance this summer where there was a situation at GuerillaTraffic regarding just the type of example you just mentioned?
George: Yes and no. I will just say that, “No good deed goes unpunished”. A favor to a friend came back and bit me in the butt. I believed in an empty promise and learned from the experience. I am not mad or bitter, just disappointed and a little disheartened.
YNOT NEWS: What are your views about how often people move from one company to another in this industry? Do you think it is detrimental for business?
George: Corporate headhunting is a part of any business. The thing that I cannot stand is the stealing of databases such as email lists. To an owner, grabbing someone’s top guy/gal is a trophy. The thing to look at is what they bring to the table. If you hire a thief, then you know what? He will steal from you too. I often test people to determine their level of integrity.
YNOT NEWS: Can you give us any tips about doing mailers?
George:
1) Use adult-only lists with IP addresses and the sites they opted in from.
2) DO SOMETHING ORIGINAL! People get 900 emails a day!
3) Don’t lie in the subject field.
4) Use a valid “from” and a valid “remove” link.
If you don’t have the resources or time to mail responsibly, contact me and I will turn your cancelled member email list into the easiest money you EVER made!
YNOT NEWS: Excellent. Now, in closing, one last question here. What’s the story with that silly gorilla jerking off and flipping the bird in your banners for the Guerilla Traffic campaign?
George: I think that means, “Fuck you.” Maybe we should spell it out?
YNOT NEWS: Hahaha… smartass…
George: No, seriously, it’s all a friendly gimmick. Tera, Sherie, Mike, Gloryhole, and myself all have a winning attitude. The gorilla is our alter-ego. We plan on taking our business to the highest level and we will be laughing the whole way. I guess it’s Jackass meets the adult Internet. My best advice is, “Don’t ever fuck a monkey!”
YNOT NEWS: Good advice indeed… in more ways than one!
How can people find your site and start making money?
George: They just need to go to www.guerillatraffic.com, and for those of you who can’t spell that word, www.gorillatraffic.com might be easier for you to remember.
