Sitting Down with Director Oliver Wong for Some Sex & Boba
“When I tell people that I am directing porn, they are always surprised… I understand ‘cause I look like I’m still preparing for the SATs.”
This week I get to sit down to talk with the very funny Oliver Wong aka Bloomer Yang about his career in the industry. Oliver is a handsome young man (I love that he can poke fun of his astoundingly youthful appearance) who also goes by the alter ego of Bloomer Yang – a film director/writer who is most recognized for his work for Delphine Films.
Not to be put in a box, Oliver is also a stand-up comedian who also just launched the Sex & Boba Podcast with Partner, Hustler writer Teresa Lo. Hw is a multi-talented artist, who writes, directs, performs, and entertains. Most of all he’s extremely invested in making good content.
Learn more about Oliver Wong/Bloomer Yang – what challenges, inspires, and keeps him working hard in the industry he calls home.
What brought you to the business and how did you get your start?
I got into the industry through a friend’s referral in 2011 who asked me if I would be interested in directing porn.
I’ve always open-minded and super liberal so I had no hesitation jumping into the adult industry and I was even thinking, “Oh, I finally get to utilize my degree in film production and screenwriting.”
I am a gay man and I’m only currently directing straight porn, which some people find funny, but to me, no matter what type of porn I am making, it’s all just human beings. It doesn’t matter to me what type of sexuality I am depicting on screen.
What has been the most challenging thing for you about being in the business?
The most challenging thing for me has been to consistently create unique storylines.
Delphine Films, the brand I primarily direct and write for, aims to create narrative-driven adult content with cinematic qualities. Coming up with unique stories and incorporating them into the films I make is demanding. Sometimes I run into writer’s block and get anxious, worrying that I won’t be able to meet the deadlines.
Another challenging thing that I have to accept is the reality that some audiences won’t watch the storyline in porn no matter how much effort I invest in storytelling. That can be discouraging, but I have a team of smart people who have faith in me and that is what keeps me going.
What do you love most about directing and writing? Where do your ideas come from?
I love seeing the story I wrote coming to life on screen. It’s the most magical feeling.
They say, “There is a movie you write, and there is a movie you make.” It’s interesting to see how a movie looks so different between being on paper and being on screen. Sometimes I have to make a compromise on set, but in the end, the concession turns out to be the secret ingredient to making the movie look great.
I often get ideas from my inner feelings.
I usually sit in my living room and just let my mind wander, searching for my past life experience and digging into stories other people have shared with me. Sometimes it doesn’t even have to be an idea that inspires me – it can just be a feeling. Like let’s say I feel anxious at the moment, I can investigate the feeling of anxiety and generate a story about anxiety.
I know you have a new podcast – Sex & Boba – that you host with partner Teresa Lo. Why are you a great pair?
Teresa Lo, a longtime friend of mine, shares a lot of similarities with me. We both work in the adult industry – I’m a porn director, she’s a writer for Hustler; we’re both Asians; we’re both stand-up comedians; and we both write. With so many overlapping qualities, there is no one better than Teresa to host a podcast with me.
Super creative and incredibly smart, I enjoy her company and of course she holds nothing back when it comes to talking about sex.
What goals do you have for 2023?
To finish a multi-episode adult series, and I want to make it a comedy!
I am thinking something like The Office or Parks & Recreation. I also hope my podcast with Teresa Lo – Sex & Boba, will take off. Last, my parents are coming to the US from Taiwan to see me, so I am hoping to spend quality time with them!
