Sex in the City: Austin, Texas, Rises to the Top
YNOT – The results of a new Men’s Health survey may disappoint residents of both coasts: Neither New York nor Los Angeles is quite the hot spot one might think when it comes to sex. The title of “most sex-crazed city” doesn’t go to America’s Sin City, Las Vegas, either.According to the magazine’s survey of birth rates, sex-toy and condom sales, and infection rates for sexually transmitted diseases in 100 U.S. cities, Texas is the country’s hotbed of carnal activity. In fact, Texas locales took seven of the top 15 spots.
Austin ranked No. 1, leading the hometown newspaper, the Austin American-Statesman, to bestow the title “Capital of Copulation.” Dallas came in at No. 2, with Arlington, Houston, Lubbock and Fort Worth leading San Antonio at No. 15. El Paso came in 27th.
Also in the sexy top 10 were Columbus, Ohio; Durham, N.C.; Denver; Indianapolis; Oklahoma City and Bakersfield, Calif.
Bringing up the rear, so to speak: St. Petersburg, Fla., at No. 95; Manchester, N.H., at 96; Charleston, W.Va., at 97; Yonkers, N.Y., at 98 and Burlington, Vt., at 99.
Dead last: Portland, Me., ranked No. 100.
“As Texans know, size does matter,” Austin’s newspaper crowed. “We do note that a lot of the cities on the list are college towns. Maybe there’s a correlation? Go figure. Either way, the heat is on in Texas, but you already knew that.”
The Texas capital is home to a number of arts and music festivals, harbors a thriving film and television industry (leading to its sometime moniker “the Third Coast”) and boasts the main campus of the University of Texas, one of the largest universities in the U.S.
A Men’s Health spokesman said that although most of the talk surrounding the list is lighthearted, the survey itself was quite serious.
“If you knew the amount of work that went into it, and the number crunching, you would take it seriously,” Men’s Health Deputy Editor Matt Marion told ABC News. “It’s great to get people talking about sex. Communication and sex go together, and everyone wins.”
And what of two cities often associated with sex, New York and Las Vegas? The former arrived at No. 70; the latter at No. 73.
“This doesn’t mean that New York and Las Vegas aren’t having plenty of sex,” Marion explained to ABC News. “It just means other cities are having a heck of a lot more.”
