Good Vibrations to Host Discussion on Consent
SAN FRANCISCO – Pioneering adult retailer Good Vibrations will host a discussion of recent legislation and issues around sexual consent and “consent culture,” on July 16, 2016, from 4-6pm, at the Good Vibrations boutique located at 534 Ramona St, in Palo Alto, CA.
Featured speakers included well-known sexologist for Good Vibrations, Dr. Carol Queen and guest Kitty Stryker, who is an activist in several areas of sexuality, as well as a “member of the queer porn intelligentsia.” Stryker is currently active in educating the public on consent, and also is compiling a number of writings on “consent culture” for a new book.
In 2014, Gov. Jerry Brown of California signed into law California Senate Bill 967 requiring California colleges to adopt rape-prevention policies that include an “affirmative consent” standard for sexual assault, the ‘Yes Means Yes’ rule. The standard puts responsibility on anyone engaging in sexual activity to obtain an “affirmative, conscious and voluntary agreement” from his or her partner.
The discussion is free to attendees over 18 years of age. Located near Stanford University, the Good Vibrations Palo Alto boutique event hopes to attract local students for whom this issue bears extra importance, due to events in the media including the recent sentencing of Brock Turner, former Stanford student found guilty of sexual assault. The discussion will touch on the nuances of consent, legally and otherwise, and may lead to questions on how consent affects the LGBTQ and BDSM communities.
Good Vibrations said it “believes that consent is sexy and can be part of a sex positive and pleasure filled life.” #ConsentMatters
