San Francisco Poised to Go Entirely Wireless
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Seattle Washington may be the mecca of super wired coffee worshippers — but San Francisco, the city full of hearts, is about to become entirely wireless.Leading the way will be Earthlink and Google, the two firms selected to make it possible for internet users anywhere within the city to access their accounts wirelessly at no cost.
A prepared statement from Google assured surfers that the company is “thrilled that the city of San Francisco has accepted our joint bid with Earthlink to provide WiFi access citywide.”
The goal of city officials is to see San Francisco become one huge wireless hot spot by New Year, with funding entirely provided by the companies involved in the venture. In order to raise the money, online advertising will be employed, as well as the introduction of special rates for premium internet connection speeds.
In order to assist in the completion of the project, San Francisco has promised to make utility poles and other public property available as antennae or other essential equipment.
San Francisco is not the only city that has received a wireless service offer from Google. The search engine giant has offered the same deal to Mountain View, California, where its campus is located. No word on whether Earthlink’s Atlanta, Georgia, home is on the list of likely beneficiaries.
