Ryan Idol Seeks New Trial

YNOT – Former gay porn star Ryan Idol is seeking a new trial in an attempt to have a conviction for attempted murder vacated. He has remained in custody awaiting sentencing since a jury pronounced him guilty in September 2011.
During a hearing scheduled to take place Sept. 21, Idol — whose real name is Marc Anthony Donais — plans to argue ineffective assistance of counsel during the original proceedings. If the judge accepts the motion, Idol likely will be freed pending a new trial. Otherwise, Sacramento, Calif., Superior Court Judge Troy L. Nunley is expected to pass sentence on the spot.
Idol, 46, faces up to 15 years in prison for assaulting a former girlfriend in September 2009. According to arrest records and court transcripts, he seriously injured the woman when he hit her in the head with a toilet-tank lid during what he described as a heated argument. Idol said he acted out of fear for his own life, believing the woman had a knife and intended to harm him. Testimony at trial suggested the woman was taking a bath at the time of the altercation.
One of the most popular gay performers in the 1990s, Idol starred in a string of best-selling titles including Idol Eyes, Idol Country, Idol Thoughts and Idol Worship. Ironically, one of his most celebrated appearances was as the cover model for Criminal Cocks.
“I just hope I can put this whole unfortunate episode behind me and get on with my life,” Idol said last week in a written statement. “I’ve made some big mistakes and let myself and others down, but I’m always amazed at how many people remember me and wish me well. My gay fans, in particular, are an amazing source of support, and I really appreciate their thoughts and prayers.”
