Residents Protest New Adam & Eve Store
NASSAU COUNTY, FL – A small group of residents in Nassau County, Florida took to the street with their picket signs to protest the opening of a new Adam & Eve store in their neighborhood. The adult entertainment store opened its doors in February, and sells lingerie, sex toys, novelty items, and adult magazines and videos.
The protesters’ message was clear.
“Pornography and sex shops in general are bad for the community,” said Rick Young, who led the demonstration in Nassau County. Young, who is co-founder of the non-profit Nassau Citizens for Family Values, had announced plans for the protest last week.
“Certainly we hope that this business will decide to move elsewhere, close its doors and move out. Move out of our county quite frankly, ” said Young.
The store’s owner, George Cebeck, said that’s not going to happen. He even put up a sign welcoming the protestors. “The spirit of the sign was to welcome the protesters, and let’s face it, protesters are good press for us,” said Cebeck.
The controversy doesn’t seem to be affecting business or keeping customers away. “People vote with their feet. If there was nobody coming into the store we wouldn’t be here,” added Cebeck.
Rick Young and the group of protesters are not ready to give up. “We plan to be here as long as it takes.”
