Report: Proportionally Speaking, VOD Porn More Popular Than Mainstream Movies
CYBERSPACE – Mainstream media has woken up to the popularity of porn on demand; television news and analysis website TVPredictions.com picked up on reports in Adult Video News magazine regarding the popularity of porn in the video on demand market, which indicates that adult content comprises 40% of all Video On Demand revenue.According to AVN’s research, adult films generate approximately $800 million of the cable VOD market’s 2 billion dollar annual revenue. The high percentage of the overall total represented by adult content is all the more impressive when you consider that many cable operators do not offer adult content, and others have only recently added sexually explicit programming to their selection of titles.
AVN also reports that 55% of people who order video on demand while checked in to hotels have selected adult videos, and that the adult industry as a whole pulls down over $12.5 billion in annual revenues.
The purchasing trends and increased revenues for the adult entertainment industry in recent years serve as both proof of the popularity of pornography, and as fuel for the concern of conservative groups – as well as the Bush Administration – who fret about the increasing “legitimization” of pornography, and easy access to adult materials.
TVPredictions.com suggests that the adult industry stands to benefit from yet another emerging technology: hi-definition television and next-generation DVD players. Many adult producers began shooting hi-def content for some time now, in anticipation of the arrival of a large new market for next-generation video.
