Reliance Jio Blocks Porn in India, Pornhub Sets Up a Mirror
Headquartered in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, Reliance Jio operates a national LTE network in India, providing coverage across 22 telecom circles. Needless to say, this news impacts a lot of mobile users.
Reliance Jio has reportedly banned adult websites in India after the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) ordered ISPs to block 827 websites in the country.
In a judgment issued on September 28, the Uttarakhand High Court ordered all ISPs to comply with an order under which almost all porn websites were to be banned. The rationale, according to the Uttarakhand High Court, centered on a need to curb access to adult content as it (presumably) adversely impacts impressionable youth — so, Reliance Jio jumped on it.
While Reliance Jio hasn’t made any official statement about the ban, last week users reported on Reddit that they were not able to access adult sites on the network.
“I’ve been trying to load a few of the porn sites but none of them seems to load on the Jio network. Is it just me or are you people facing the same issues,” a Reliance Jio user wrote on Reddit. The same thread had several other Jio users complaining about similar issues.
But never fear! Ever helpful, Pornhub has already set up a mirror to get about the ban.
It should be noted that some lesser-known adult sites were reportedly still working on the Jio network as of last week. It’s unknown at this time if other telecommunication service providers will jump on Jio’s ban bandwagon.
