Porn Women Want to Watch
By Peter Berton
PHILADELPHIA – Many men labor under the mistaken impression women just don’t like porn. While some women don’t enjoy adult content, others do. The secret to creating a porn-friendly relationship in which couples can enjoy porn — and it’s side effects — together is in finding the kind of porn women want to watch.
HotMoviesForHer.com has built a successful business upon the idea that women like porn, as long as that porn speaks to their idea of what’s hot. Finding adult material women find erotic is no small task, but Evelyn Mae James, aka Emja, took it on with gusto. As assistant editor for the website, she’s in frequent contact with HMFH’s clientele, who are happy to help her decide whether a movie “works.”
YNOT.com spoke with James to get the skinny.
YNOT: Where did the inspiration for HotMoviesForHer.com come from?
Evelyn Mae James: It’s no secret that for a long time there was an obvious void in where women-friendly porn should have been. So, we stepped in. HotMoviesForHer.com is a resource for women regarding porn, sex and all things fun. We strive to be as current as current gets with new film reviews, sex toy reviews and news in general, be it porn-related or pop culture with a sexy side.
We also feature straight, lesbian, gay and queer theaters, but “I heart girl porn” is our mantra.
HotMoviesForHer was created by women who believe porn is absolutely fantastic, and we want to share our love for porn with other women. So, with the help of our team and our readers and viewers, we stay focused on creating an online environment containing what turns us on. Of course it varies per person, but we’ll help any woman find what she wants.
A big question in porn watching — beyond the “surprising” statistic that women enjoy watching skin flicks — is, “where can women find porn with plots, romance, gonzo, bondage, down and dirty, whatever, within a safe site free of spyware, ads and too much testosterone?” The answer is us. We have a ridiculous number of video-on-demand titles, and we pick and choose to feature our favorites. And we talk about stuff. We’re like the dirty-but-responsible best friend.
So what do you offer that women can’t find anywhere else?
For content we have two main sections of interest, our theater of VOD titles and our blog. Our theater contains a massive collection of VOD films — every genre of porn imaginable and some you probably couldn’t imagine.
On the main page of our theater site we list featured movies, featured stars, new releases and our most popular films. We update the selections constantly, so no one gets bored and there are always new things to discover. Viewers can pay by the minute to watch any of our films, or they can purchase scenes and full movies to download to own or store in our cloud and watch over and over again.
The second section of our site is the blog. Goodness, we feature everything here. I’ve done Twitter battles between porn stars and studios, had “inspirational quotes” that are absolutely hilarious, featured stars, live-tweeted movie reviews, put up “a day in the life” of a porn star from her own perspective, and introduced the latest stars and trends of Porn Valley. The blog honestly runs the gamut.
The most important thing to me is that readers are informed, having fun and can find a place where they know it’s totally fine to thrive with porn. I even put up an article where I admitted what I learned from porn. It’s funny, but pretty enlightening as well.
What kind of porn appeals to women?
This question could get me into trouble! I say that mainly because I try so hard to break the gender stigma of porn viewers and sex lovers.
What appeals to women more than to men? I honestly don’t yet know, but we’re doing something right. I created a list called “The Hottest Guys in Porn (That are Not James Deen),” and that was a huge hit. Yes, of course we love James Deen, but he isn’t the only sexy man in porn these days. So, I whipped up my own list, and the feedback was like an avalanche. Ladies were crawling out of the rafters with men I had “left out” (most of them I hadn’t even seen yet, so I learned a lot), and they spoke up about what turns them on.
We share. We converse with each other. But there’s still so much I look to within men’s sites, and of course I still get turned on, and I learn. So honestly, men, you are more than welcome to view HMFH as well.
Tell us about your customers. Who is HMFH’s “typical” consumer?
It’s always hard to tell who composes actual site demographics, so I will just answer with this: We market our site and blog to adult women who want to explore sexuality and enjoy what porn has to offer. Having said that, we welcome everyone. We have received feedback from couples who were interested in watching porn together but couldn’t find a comfortable place for both parties, and we also welcome men who want a less hardcore feel to their porn-watching experience.
What do you, personally, bring to HMFH?
What I can really bring is that I don’t hold back. Ever. Women coming into the porn sector as viewers rather than as performers still unnerve people. Even within my group of friends there are still those who hold back and won’t admit they enjoy watching porn until they get a little tipsy.
I can’t hold back. I have to connect; I have to bare all and have fun. I put my suggestions out there and do what I can to encourage feedback. Feedback may be someone commenting “you got it all wrong — this star or movie is totally hot.” That makes me happy. Bring it on!
At HMFH, we are not here to tell anyone what to watch. We are here to be a starting point — a place of resource and fun, no matter what kind of craziness erupts.
