Porn Tweets Embarrass State Officials
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Officials at a taxpayer-funded project to bring West Virginia’s administrative computer systems into the digital age have opened an internal investigation after discovering links to pornography in the organization’s Twitter stream.
Although WVOASIS’ management originally thought the official Twitter account had been hacked, it now appears the tweets may have come from inside the organization.
The investigation began Monday, after officials were directed to a sarcastic tweet posted Saturday evening: “Bumper stickers are how we tell people we only had $1.50 to spend on a belief system.” The link in the tweet led to a hardcore adult website.
WVOASIS spokeswoman Allison Adler told Charleston’s Daily Mail newspaper a survey of the rest of the stream uncovered another inappropriate tweet posted April 27: “I’ve been putting vodka in my fruit smoothies. Also, no fruit.” That message also linked to an adult website.
WVOASIS deleted both tweets Monday morning.
“We are looking into what happened and when the posts were made,” Adler told the Daily Mail, initially saying the account had been hacked.
She later admitted she may have overstated that suspicion: “As of now, we have no confirmation that the account has been hacked.”
The account’s password has been changed to limit access, she said.
WVOASIS is developing the state’s Enterprise Resource Planning System at a cost to taxpayers of more than $110 million. The multi-year program is tasked with combining all state computer systems into a single network to allow better management of accounts, personnel and assets.
The project’s official Facebook and Twitter accounts are managed by WVOASIS’ “enterprise readiness team,” which is responsible for outreach and communications.
