Police Reluctantly Give Adult Store Clean Bill of Legality
HAMDEN, CT — Much to the chagrin of those who find the mere existence of adult businesses to be offensive, police and planning officials alike have been unable to find anything illegal about Adult Video Liquidators. Not only has the store shown no signs of criminal activity but authorities have had to admit that its stock appears to be entirely legal, as well.
Two weeks ago investigators leapt into action, inspired by an anonymous complaint to the mayor’s office that the store had video booths, which the mystery man contended was against the law.
On Thursday, however, police chief Thomas J. Wydra confessed that in spite of the excellent clues presented by the unknown caller that “more activity than usual” had been taking place in the parking lot of the business, “We have no information that any criminal activity is taking place.”
This is likely a disappointment to the Mayor Craig B. Henrici, who said that the discovery of “buddy booths” in the establishment was “very disturbing and our police, zoning and building departments are all aware of what they have to do.”
What they “have to do,” at least for now, is leave the store, its staff and customers alone.
This doesn’t mean that planning officials are not investigating whether the store might be in violation of zoning regulations.
Adult Video Liquidators has been in business at its current location for 17 years and is the only store of its kind permitted to operate within a controlled development district.
