Podcasting 101 – Part 1
Since starting our podcast, Adult Site Broker Talk in 2020, many people have reached out to me with questions about the best practices when it comes to podcasting.
So, I decided to write this article to help.
First a little background on me. Long before owning Adult Site Broker and starting Adult Site Broker Talk, I was in the radio industry for over 2 decades. Much of that was on the sales side, but I did spend some years as a sportscaster. I also got my degree in broadcast journalism. So of course, I learned the basics about things like microphone technique, engineering, editing and other things that still help me today in my podcasts.
The first thing you need to do is to establish a format for your podcast. We decided to spotlight people in the adult industry, from executives to performers and everything in between. It has worked out well for us. But the most important thing is to choose a format that goes with what it is that you’re trying to accomplish in your business.
Along with that, you may want to try to have a general idea how long you want your podcast to be. Personally, I keep it open ended. I don’t like to restrict my guests and I don’t chop up their interviews. I like a natural sounding podcast. I’ve had one instance where an interview went so long and so well that I made it a 2-part series. For those of you in the know in the adult industry it will come as no surprise to anyone that person was Brad Mitchell of Mojohost. His interview was so amazing I decided to run it over 2 podcasts. Some have run as short as just over 30 minutes and some as long as just over an hour. But you may want to have a time limit and if you do, set it, and live with it. This is podcasting, not radio, so I don’t believe time limits matter, if the content is interesting. Personally, I don’t believe too short of a podcast is good either.
Another thing you need is a name for your podcast. The name of your podcast should reflect what it is you’re covering or some other important aspect of your show that will tell the listeners what the podcast is about. After a long and hard deliberation (just kidding) I picked Adult Site Broker Talk. Really, it was about the only way to go for what I was trying to accomplish. I wanted to share good information, both about what we do and what others in the industry are all about. The goal is to help others in the business grow as well as help promote our company.
For example, two good friends of mine who are performers have podcasts, Lily Craven has Phone Sex with Lily and Coralyn Jewel has the Embrace with Coralyn Jewel podcast. These two women have established very popular podcasts that have really helped to market everything they do.
After you establish a format, it’s a good idea to put a script template on paper. Even if you’re just going to do an interview only podcast, you’ll need an open and a close. If you want some ideas on how that should sound check out our podcast, Adult Site Broker Talk.
Your opening should introduce your podcast in general, what it’s all about and why it’s important for people to listen to it. You should also thank people for joining you. Then you can introduce your guest, assuming you have interviews on the podcast.
Your closing should talk about your next show, highlight future guests, thank your guest, and thank people for listening.
Next time we’ll talk about equipment and other essentials to make your podcast top notch.
