Petition Leads Kansas Grand Jury to Consider Porn Store Obscenity Charges
WICHITA, KS – A Wichita, Kansas anti-porn group that has so far unsuccessfully attempted to convince that state’s legislature to levy a special tax against adult businesses has had better luck with the court system.Members of the group, known as Operation SouthWind, went door-to-door and set up booths in order to collect enough signatures to force the Sedgwick County grand jury into an investigation about whether or not local adult businesses violated state obscenity laws.
After collecting and presenting 6,495 valid signatures, Operation SouthWind filed a petition with the District Court on August 8, insisting that it investigate possible obscenity violations. Grand jury investigations may be petitioned if the number of signatures turned in equals two-percent of the total votes cast locally in the previous gubernatorial election. The matter will be dealt with on September 19, when the grand jury convenes.
