Online Cyber Sex Game Lands Chinese Man in Legal Trouble
CHINA — China’s infamous online policy of relentless censorship has struck again; this time due to the saucy subject matter involved in an online gaming for profit venture.“Girlfriend Hut” may not sound particularly scandalous or even sexy to the western ear, but a game developer identified only as “Dai” was able to attract more than 200,000 online gamers to his website – before the Chinese authorities shut it down and threw him in jail.
As part of its never ending battle against all things deemed indecent or subversive, the Chinese government has regulated blogs and search engines, as well as closed down erotic websites. Now it appears to be going after those who indulge in cyber sex, which Dai is accused of providing for his users during their gaming experiences, according to the Times of India.
Representatives from the Ministry of Public Security claim that by the time Dai was apprehended on June 5th, he had made more than $3,900 US from 700 paying subscribers. Additionally, the unnamed spokesperson opined that “In recent years, internet games have become a booming and profitable market, but some games with a sexually explicit nature are corrupting China’s vast number of young players.”
