Once-Permissive VT Town Bans Public Nudity
BRATTLEBORO, VT — A Vermont town once known for its lax stance on the issue of a person’s right to be naked in public if s/he wishes has taken a large step back. City officials voted last week to place a 30-day temporary ordinance banning nudity. The ban covers nudity in the center of town and near local churches and schools. The specifics are likely to be incorporated into a larger ban that will be worked out next month.
“We’ve received quite a number of complaints on this,” Assistant Town Manager Barbara Sondag told the Associated Press. “This was brought up last summer … and kind of died down. Then a couple of incidents again this summer have got the issue to resurface.”
Although nude sunbathing and swimming will remain legal in the state, strolling through the center of Brattleboro in your birthday suit will garner you a $100 fine… and maybe a few phone numbers, if you have been to the gym lately.
