Okla. Man Arrested for ‘Revenge Porn’ Extortion
TULSA, Okla. – An Oklahoma man faces five felony counts of extortion arising from his operation of a “revenge porn” website.
Casey E. Meyering, 28, was arrested Feb. 13 in Tulsa, Okla., where he lives. Authorities await a governor’s warrant for his extradition to California, where the charges were filed.
According to court documents, Meyering owns and operates WinByState.com, a website that encouraged end-users to upload nude and explicit images without the depicted individual’s permission. The website creates a game-like atmosphere by awarding points for the uploads. Meyering allegedly encouraged users to tag the photos with personally identifiable information, and then used that information to demand victims pay him to remove their images.
The con game was discovered when a California woman found unauthorized photos of herself on the site and asked for their removal, only to be directed to pay $250 to a Google wallet account. Authorities later traced the Google wallet to Meyering.
“This behavior is the very definition of predatory, and this website made a game out of humiliating victims for profit,” California Attorney General Kamala Harris said. “These actions, at their core, are about one individual exploiting the privacy and trust of others for financial gain. We will continue to investigate and prosecute those who participate in these deplorable and illegal activities.”
The California legislature outlawed “revenge porn” in October. Posting identifiable nude or explicit images of a person without their knowledge is a misdemeanor in the state.
Meyering is not the first person to face California-based charges over “revenge porn,” although he appears to be the first suspect sought for extradition from another state. In December 2013, California authorities arrested Kevin Bollaert in San Diego. Bollaert, 27, faces 31 felony charges of conspiracy, identity theft and extortion in connection with his ownership and operation of the website UGotPosted.com.
In January, the FBI arrested Hunter Moore, 27, in Los Angeles. Moore, the man credited with creating the revenge-porn phenomenon, faces a 15-count federal indictment including charges of conspiracy, hacking and identity theft.
