No Shortage of Sex in Canada, Eh?
YNOT – In the past four years, Toronto-based e-tailer PinkCherry Adult Toys has more than quadrupled its warehouse space in order to keep up with what the company characterizes as burgeoning demand for sexual accoutrements. And no wonder: Sales statistics indicate Canadians aren’t shy about spicing up their private lives.
During the 12-month period beginning May 1, 2011, new customers accounted for 56 percent of PinkCherry’s sales. Canadians spent an average of $89.82 per order, with the highest average spend per transaction occurring in Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Fort McMurray, Kelowna, Trois Rivieres and Longueuil.
According to a PinkCherry spokesperson, Toronto, Edmonton and Calgary ranked first, second and third, respectively, in total sex toy purchases.

Among the categories on the company’s retail website, the most often visited by Canadians is devoted to male masturbators. The category’s homepage was viewed 681,178 times between May 1, 2011, and May 1, 2012. Vibrators and dildos for women followed closely behind; in fact, the most popular products in the company’s inventory during the year studied were the Magic Wand and the Wild G Vibe, both designed for women.
PinkCherry is owned and operated by two Canadian brothers with backgrounds in e-commerce. In addition to its retail presence, the company also maintains a wholesale division.
