New Software Claims 100K Piracy Takedowns in 24 Hours
YNOT – Marina Del Rey, Calif.-based anti-piracy firm Takedown Piracy has developed a patent-pending, custom tool called Aikido, which the company said is capable of removing as many as 100,000 instances of copyright infringement in as few as 24 hours. Aikido is exclusive to TDP and uses a PHP script to exploit large piracy aggregation sites, transforming them into valuable asset in the ongoing battle against content thieves.
“I named this amazing tool the Aikido program after the martial art using the power of one’s opponent against them,” said TDP owner Nate Glass. “After all, this is a fight the adult industry is engaged in, and we need to create alternative methods of battle in order to survive.”
Aikido targets so-called “cyberlockers,” online storage sites that offer financial incentives for content pirates to become copyright infringers. If they wish to claim financial rewards, cyberlocker users must operate with less anonymity than other content pirates, which makes them a bit easier to track as they spread their wares across hundreds of similar websites, Glass indicated.
While cyberlocker sites might seem to be a huge problem for copyright holders, in actuality they perform a valuable service by containing huge numbers of infringements in one place, he added.
“Companies want to see every piracy site destroyed, but realistically, piracy is never going to go completely away,” Glass said. “While it may seem counterintuitive, sometimes the pirates themselves can be a great asset. The Aikido program turns their own power against them.”
During beta-testing, Glass said one of TDP’s larger adult studio clients saw more than 100,000 instances of infringement terminated within 24 hours. Medium-sized studios experienced between 25,000 and 30,000 infringement eliminations within the same period.
“It was important to me the Aikido program not be a one-time shot,” Glass said. “I had the programmer build out the script in a way allowing for repeat actions which aren’t redundant. This turns top piracy sites into valuable assets for my clients.”
Takedown Piracy actively tracks nine different ways content may be pirated. The company offers content owners assistance in removing their material from cyberlocker sites like Rapidshare, torrent sites, tube sites, auctions and sales by unauthorized DVD resellers, search engines, image hosts, blogs, forums and social media. According to Glass, on its clients’ behalf TDP has removed a total of more than 2.3 million instances of copyright infringement through March 31.
