New Research Says Tablet Ownership Has Doubled Since Last Year
YNOT — If you haven’t optimized your websites for viewing on tablet devices yet, then news from a recent Pew Internet Project study might prove motivating. According to the Pew study, one in three Americans now own a tablet device.
The results indicate a doubling of tablet ownership in the United States over the last 12 months.
The Pew study also indicates that tablet owners tend to come from wealthier households. 56% of tablet owners in the U.S. come from households with incomes of at least $75,000 USD per year.
Tablet owners also appear to me slightly older than smartphone users. Almost half of all tablet owners fall in the age range of 35-44, where smartphones are most popular with 18-34 year-old users.
According to adult content service Webmaster Central, tablet growth for adult websites has exploded.
“The iPad is 23% of all mobile traffic for us now, almost as much as iPhone now in visits per day for us,” said Gabe Kapchuck of Webmaster Central. “The tablet market has definitely grown over the last year for adult companies.”
To take advantage of the explosive growth in tablet sales, Webmaster Central took a number of steps to optimize its content and delivery technologies for tablet viewers.
“We use HTML5 player to deliver the content, and we use Responsive to test layouts,” added Kapp. “Also, the quality of the video we provide to tablet viewers is much higher than that of the smaller mobile videos.”
Pew’s research results came from telephone interviews of 2,252 adults, conducted over a period of April 17th through May 19th. The sampling error is plus or minus 2.3 percent.
