Mobile Adult Video to Take Lion’s share of $13 Billion by 2014
YNOT – Nearly 43 percent of internet users view adult content online, and 22 percent of the six billion mobile subscribers worldwide access the internet on their mobile phones at least once a month. Web surfing on mobiles is expected to overtake desktop access by 2014. Combine those statistics with the common knowledge that video is the most-consumed category of adult entertainment, add a few other pieces of research data, and it’s no stretch to reach the conclusion that video is right on target to consume a projected 69 percent of mobile traffic by 2014. Most of the money on the adult web — an estimated $13 billion annually — will follow the traffic.
The data, collected from a variety of sources and analyzed by Cherry Media S.L., are revealed in a handy infographic the company posted to its CherrySource.net informational website this week. Insight and projections are part of the package.
Among the data illuminated are:
- One out of seven internet searches originate on a mobile device; 25 percent of those searches use the keyword “sex.”
- Every second, 30,00 people are viewing adult content; men are six times more likely than women to do so.
- The average American spends 2.7 hours per day using his or her mobile device.
- Adult video consumption on tablet computers is expected to triple between 2012 and 2015.
“We wanted to create an infographic to provide executives with the most comprehensive overview of mobile erotica in existence,” said Cherry Media founder and Chief Executive Officer Julia Dimambro. “Quantifying any marketing information regarding adult is a challenge, which is why Cherry Media, with our 10 years of experience, felt that it was important to provide the mobile and adult industries with proven market facts and figures.
“With recent reports claiming there are now over five billion mobile subscribers worldwide and that adult mobile revenues are expected to reach over $1 billion by 2015, it is imperative that companies learn how to exploit this highly lucrative and ‘crisis-proof’ industry sector.”
Launched in 2003 — long before mobile distribution of adult content was considered feasible or cost-effective in the U.S. — Barcelona-based Cherry Media cut its teeth in European markets, winning awards almost out of the gate. On Thursday, the company accepted Best Adult Mobile Company trophy from the ME Awards for the fourth year (2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012).
The ME Awards are given by Mobile Entertainment, the trade publication of the mobile entertainment industry. More than 300 senior industry professionals attended the seventh annual ceremony, hosted at the Royal Garden Hotel in London. The awards are peer-driven.
“I am so proud that the mobile industry has once again awarded us this accolade for Best Adult Mobile Company,” Dimambro said. “It is Cherry Media’s mission to not only be the leading adult entertainment mobile company, but to also be the first port of call for businesses wanting to monetize their adult products and their traffic to the global mobile market. 2012 has been a great year for Cherry Media, and next year will be our 10th birthday. We have lots of exciting projects to launch on the world’s mobile stage during 2013.”
