Megabucks, Anime, Animation and Mega Mainstream Media!
“The good ol’ days of guys like me and my crew whippin’ out a logo or a series for a webmaster are soon to be gone…Well O’ honorable adult webmeisters, last week there was a kick ass display of animation on the web here in Los Angeles at the historic Roosevelt Hotel. I couldn’t believe the gusto put into the mainstream companies that are throwing ungodly amounts of money to turn the web into the biggest television network in the cosmos…
Years ago when I and several other guys decided we’d put our toons on the web and make loot, we got laughed at by the big time comics companies and animation studios. “It’ll never work!” said some, ” The internet is a fad!” said others. Yep, they’re tastin’ foot in mouth now! And yep, there was a good showing of adult material too! I know many of these guys from the big companies like Warner Bros, Stanleemedia.com etc. We’ve known one another for years, and they did give yours truly his proper due as one of the early pioneers. I was blown away to find out that these guys had amassed a war chest of venture capital close to a billion dollars!
Guys I knew who were once fresh faced kids outta college are now at the helm of major studios and their venture onto the web with Flash animation as their primary tool. The production values are high though I’m personally not too knocked out over the content. These are major, major productions that make most websites look like banner farms. Their venture into the adult realm was predictable cause I know my markets and am always ten years ahead of the other guy. Actually my pals in Japan who run the big Anime sites hipped me to this years ago and I thank em’ no end.
So what’s this mean to you the adult webmaster? Well, good news and bad news. The average or even big time webmaster won’t be able to get any of this stuff for content nor traffic from em’. Why? Cause every available animator and cartoonist in the western world has been scraped up. Musicians, editors etc. are now working for the animation companies and episodic toons tailored for an adult audience are rapidly hitting the net (i.e. I believe Tom Arnold’s got a new toon coming out).
The good ol’ days of guys like me and my crew whippin’ out a logo or a series for a webmaster are soon to be gone and those of you who got in early are gonna be makin’ good loot and become part of internet history. The other downside here is many of the animation companies on the web are doing the same boo boos they did in feature and television animation. Not enough original content, lots of licensed content that is only developed because they have ‘names’ attached to them like the Backstreet Boys new feature where they get turned into superheroes! What’s next? It’s an open field gang. If you’re not backed by some major corporate giant the battle could be tough but the net is unlike any other communications network.

Here, it don’t matter how much money you’ve got backing you, if it ain’t cool, it ain’t gonna sell. Plain and simple. Sure there’s gonna be management overruns and investor’s losing their cool and I foresee many of the bigger animation companies taking a major economic fall if they try to just put out hack properties. That’s what killed the animation mainstream and comic book mainstream. Don’t hire ethical quality people, if you do, fuck with em’ til they wanna quit, was the rule of thumb which led to billions of dollars lost and thousands of talented people outta work. Not me. Saw the writin’ on the wall years ago. (actually, used to use that old TELRAM) system wayyyy back in the 80’s to send toons out. The net was a baby back then.
So, as in Japan, people have a growing thirst for sexy toons. I guess people don’t feel so guilty by watchin’ a toon take her top off. Hey, ya ain’t gotta get an age contract for a toon! How can adult webmasters horn in on this biz? Well if ya ain’t got a couple million dollars to invest I’ld say sit back and watch. If you’re an artist, invest in your talent and create your own content. Or cut a deal with an artist and pay em’. You can always spend a G for a toon logo and make money with t-shirts, mousepads and other licensed material. Heck, if you’ve got 500 regular fans willing to shell out $20 for a tshirt you’re bringing in $5,000.
These new animation sites and ventures are going to be fun to watch over the coming year and I’ll betcha’ the adult sites do better. One way I have fun is by contacting strippers and models and amateurs who have their own sites and I whip up a logo/t-shirt for em and they send me pics and we show everybody how the process is done. Believe you me, a fan at a nightclub WILL buy a t-shirt for himself and a buddy if there’re big boobs on it! One time I did litho painting for a model in France. Sold out online in 4 minutes.
Well, that’s about all for this rant. Stay tuned as I combine some of the coolest software and hardware not seen in the west yet that should change the way the internet is viewed. This business gets better and better!
