Maryland Town Plots to Outlaw Adult Businesses
EASTON, MD — Those who oppose pornography and other forms of adult entertainment are giving themselves nine months to gestate a plan to legally keep anything X-rated from being available within Easton, MD. Two ordinances were passed Tuesday by the Easton Town Council, each designed to change zoning regulations to define and ban adult-oriented businesses.
The Star Democrat indicates that Town Attorney Sharon Van Emburgh anticipates further changes to zoning regulations, but insists that the two new restrictions are necessary for the future and absolute moratorium.
Panic at the possibility of an adult bookstore opening within the town spawned the rush to tighten zoning laws, although the building was ultimately leased to another business entity. Van Emburgh promises that future zoning changes will further remove loopholes that might allow adult businesses to open shop.
Currently, erotic materials may be offered for sale if they account for less than 20-percent of a store’s stock, floor space and overall revenue. The Town Council has given itself nine months to figure out a way to keep adult businesses from opening anywhere and presumably disallow even the small amount now legally available in otherwise non-adult shops.
