I just read a reprint of one of your articles (YNot Network Newsletter, Apr 26, 2001) denouncing the marketing strategies of Adult sites as a learning model. Bottom line, the only reason they sell is because they have a product that sells itself–“in spite” of their marketing strategies.
I am an adult site owner/webmaster (Pornotopia.com and ErosZona.com), and I would say that while your observations are accurate to a lot of disgusting adult site marketing crap out there, you may have over stepped yourself with some unjust generalizations.
Perhaps you would say, because of the product (sex)–pratically no strategies are necessary. But, I have statistics to show that not only do my customers buy, they stay and support our efforts. I have extremely low chargeback/refund rates or customer service complaints–and not because there is an unavailable email. In fact, the email I do get is overwhelmingly positive. We are not an adult site that falls into the smutty marketing description you so casually assign to the entire industry. Along with that, we associate and network with other sites of similar values and integrity. So, we are not the imperceptible exception.
If you want to teach your readers something about the adult industry–teach them that there is a difference between the sleaze and the worthy. Teach them to ask themselves why they are the ones offering up their hard earned coins to support the trash instead of the quality. Please don’t be so bold as to drop all online adult sites in the same descriptive basket. And it just may be that it “is” with the “quality adult sites” that the dot commers might, indeed, have a lesson or two to learn from.
I am dedicated to the cause of elevating consumer awareness about the many adult websites that demonstrate integrity and ethical work practices I am distressed and tired of the pornographic industry being drug down by the dishonest and degenerate practices of the money grubbing greedy mongers. I feel these practices reinforce the mainstream consciousness that the sex industry is out to rip them off, deceive them and hurt them instead of encourage people to trust in and consume quality adult entertainment and education.
I appreciate being associated with like minded webmasters and would like to offer support in promoting awareness around this cause.

Great YNOT News. I had to re-read several of the statements made in the Business Threads article just to see if what I was reading was correct. I went to see what the ‘5-step sales process’ was and was amazed that this group feels that doing business online is just like doing retail and should be treated as such. Thanks for sharing such a close minded view of someone that clearly doesn’t get it.
