Living a BDSM Lifestyle on the Edge
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – Say what you like about author E.L. James’s literary talent, but her Fifty Shades of Grey and related novels have had an enormous impact on the way the public at large views BDSM play. No longer considered an “extreme” taste in sexual adventure, BDSM’s preference continuum now exists right out in the open as part of the larger continuum of sexual normalcy.
For more than 20 years, manufacturer Sportsheets has catered to the desires of those who prefer to play on the milder end of the spectrum. As trends have changed, however, so have Sportsheets products. In response to demand, the company recently added the Edge line of products to a BDSM lineup anchored by the softer Sex & Mischief brand.
“Most consumers that live a BDSM and fetish lifestyle are very familiar with the brands Sex & Mischief and Sportsheets,” said International Sales Manager Corrin Brubaker. “For years BDSM has been considered a taboo area of the adult novelty industry, but as it has gotten more and more mainstream and the press on it has become more acceptable, the demand for our products has skyrocketed. We have primarily focused on offering soft bondage products, but for those people who really live the BDSM lifestyle and are looking to add high quality, we came up with Edge.”
At launch, the Edge line contained 10 products: leather wrist, ankle and arm restraints; an adjustable spreader bar; a classic leather slapper; the Hard Limits crop; the only six-point hog tie on the market; a leather blindfold; a spike flogger and the Extreme Under The Bed Restraints.
“Most of the products in the Edge line are made with high-quality cowhide leather,” said Chief Executive Officer Tom Stewart. “We wanted to create a Cadillac line and make it so evident to any customer considering purchasing an Edge product that they were getting the highest-quality product available. In fact, we frequently ask ‘Do you have what it takes to go to the Edge?’”
