Like it or not, the Internet is Made for Sporn!
REDWOOD CITY, CA — The clever animation sequence promoting Electronic Arts’ (EA) brand-spanking new program, Spore Creature Creator, begs users to “leave my sister out of it” when it comes to mocking up alien life forms. It then signs off with “that is all.” As a number of saucier Spore creature creators have discovered, that is definitely not “all” if AE decides your creature is too naughty. “Your Electronic Arts account has been flagged for violating the Electronic arts Inc. Terms of Service,” the email begins. “We believe that the violation or behavior is serious enough to bring to your attention as it may impact your future access to the service.”
At issue is the fact that some program owners – including PC Gamer UK’s Kristen Salvatore — have noticed that not only do most living creatures possess some kind of secondary sexual characteristics – but they can be fun to animate in a variety of sexy or silly ways.
Not in the wacky land of Spore Creature Creator, however.
An AE representative contacted by a ComputerAndVideoGames.com blogger was informed tersely that “Whether it’s modeling clay, dolls, or crayons, a small number of people can be counted on to use it for something inappropriate.”
While some might consider “something inappropriate” to include stuffing the program up one’s nose – or the nose of others – AE apparently considers “something inappropriate” to include creating leaping creatures with penis tails, waddling wonders with multiple breasts, or uniquely jointed self-penetrating playthings.
So far, more than 250,000 creatures have been created since AE.com and Spore.com launched the downloadable, Facebook-enabled, and YouTube promoted service. Alas, as so often the case, Electronic Arts is determined to remove a huge part of creature anatomy, biology, and creativity from Spore for fear that the young will notice that there’s something in their pants other than Pampers. Perhaps, the company would prefer that fans play a nice war game instead of allowing their freak flag to fly without an underwire or proper trousers.
While they survive the censorial ax, check out some of the unauthorized creatures… and remember that “SPORE is a great creative tool with parental controls that allow users to flag objectionable content and keep it out of their game.”
