Other guests included Nicole from Shane’s World and TabooGal from TabooRevenue.com. The live chat room was loaded with listeners, and the new YNOTRadio.com site received plenty of positive response.
Don King spoke with hosts YNOTBob and LAJ from Las Vegas where he was preparing for the upcoming boxing match between Jones and Tarver. Asked if he had any advice, as a successful events promoter for up-and-coming Internet events promoters, King said it all comes down to one’s approach.
“You have to have faith in God first and foremost, have confidence in yourself,” said King. “When everyone says, “No you can’t,” you say, “Yes I can.” And no matter how people come at you, they’re all gonna have different idiosyncrasies and different opinions, stay true to thine self … work hard, be determined, you know what I mean? And do what George Bernard Shaw would say, ‘Some people see things and ask why, I dream things that never were and ask why not.’”
Porn legend Nina Hartley appeared after King and spoke at length about her personal life, her views on pornography and sexuality, the movie Boogie Nights, the AIDS scare and politics in general. Asked whether she agreed that the modern day was more sexually liberal than the 1970’s, Hartley seemed to be genuinely torn as to which era she felt was more permissive.
“On some ways the seventies were more liberal because people were just breaking out of the confines of their repressive views,” explained Hartley. “And now there’s a huge backlash, as we know, and the folks that were silenced a bit during the seventies have now come back in full force, the religious right, they’re in charge of our government, they’re in charge of our justice system for the most part … they’re the people pushing abstinence only, no condoms, no you can’t hear about birth control, no you can’t hear about abortion, people who still think homosexuality is wrong and evil and sinful … as you know the country is polarizing like it’s never been before … I don’t know if it’s more liberal now.”
Host YNOTBob pointed to movies such as the R-rated Mark Whalberg film Boogie Nights as an example of how the mainstream was growing more liberal in its views of sexuality. Hartley appeared in that film as the sexually active wife of a character played by actor William H. Macy. Asked what it was like to work on that movie, Hartley said it was an extremely positive experience.
“That was a blast,” said Hartley. “I loved it, it was great … [it was] a sixty day shoot, and I just had the best time. I would do it again if anyone asked, but they don’t. I’m not going to go try for it because that’s just beating your head against a brick wall, but if someone wants to use me in a movie again, I’d be, depending on the movie, I’d be very game for it.”
Hartley added that working with William H. Macy was also a great experience, and she said that he lived up to the hype as one of the nicest men she had ever met. Host LAJ quickly seized the opportunity for a few laughs.
“I had a bit part in that movie,” joked LAJ. “I was Mark Whalberg’s stunt double at the end.”
The discussion then turned to the Extreme Associates case and Rob Black’s battle against the government on charges of obscenity. Asked if she thought Black’s content went too far, Hartley said that she supported Black’s right to make the films that he makes, even though she doesn’t personally enjoy them, so long as the production involves consenting adults only.
“Consent is not the absent of no, it is a statement of shared intent. So if I know that I’m going to come to work and do a simulated rape/murder scene and I say, ‘Yes, I’m down for that,’ then that’s fine. Now he is guilty of making not pornography but bad art. I don’t think it works as pornography. It doesn’t turn me on, I don’t think it turns anybody on, but it makes you look … art’s job is to shock and to jolt and to introduce you to a part of yourself that you might not have wanted to know. If you look at art and go, ‘Oh isn’t that nice,’ it’s not really art, it’s not doing its job … It’s really, really foolish for pornographers to gang up on each other. To the outside world, Rob Black is no better or worse than Nina Hartley. We fuck for a living, we have sex on camera, and that makes us worthy of condemnation and rejection and judgment.”
