Kink Invites Controversy with ‘Deception’
SAN FRANCISCO – Prominent BDSM and fetish content producer Kink.com is no stranger to controversy, but the studio’s latest project represents a calculated effort to trigger loud protests from vocal critics like Gail Dines. The outspoken feminist and anti-porn crusader once accused Kink’s productions of violating the UN’s convention against torture.
The advance trailer for Deception, a full-length feature combining graphic horror with hardcore sex, debuted Friday at Deception2015.com.
The movie itself will bow in early September under Kink’s Hogtied brand. Cherry Torn and Veruca James play hikers trapped and tortured by a sadistic psychopath.
“Fear is just another way of hijacking our body’s fight-or-flight response to provide a more intense sexual release,” said the director known as The Pope. Still, he admits the film is “extreme, even for us.”
Hollywood has long employed the potent mix of fear and arousal—from modern horror classics like Sleepaway Camp and Friday the 13th to “artier” films like American Psycho and Cabin in the Woods. However, because of distributor fears and obscenity codes, pornographic “horror” movies tend toward parody and camp. The Pope said he set out to push traditional boundaries.
“This probably isn’t a film that we’d ever be able to release on DVD, even in an edited version, but it was important for me to make,” he said. “I wanted to produce an authentic horror film that would really trigger panic in both the performers and the viewers. If it makes some people uncomfortable, so be it.”
