JavaScript Banners Increase Website Real Estate
YNOT – A new kind of “smart banner” that reportedly keeps advertising messages in sight without disrupting either users’ experience or existing static ads may help mobile website owners increase their ad-space inventory and, consequently, their revenues.
The banners, called “spinning” and “adhesion,” debuted as part of a recent upgrade to mobile advertising network Reporo’s proprietary platform. Both formats were developed using JavaScript, which plays well with many smarphones and tablet computers.
As the name suggests, spinning banners rotate on an axis, revealing three different creatives per user session. Transitions are smooth and time-delayed in order to give viewers an opportunity to acknowledge each ad.
“The key benefit for all advertisers is a higher chance of their ad appearing on more pages and their products having increased chances of being seen by the users on the mobile site,” Reporo Operations Director Neil Ives said. “In terms of performance, the spinning banner has shown that it not only increases the number of clicks, but drives higher revenues for publishers.”
Adhesion banners, which Ives called “an industry first,” at first appear to be static. As the user scrolls through a page’s content, however, the ad disappears so as not to get in the way. When the user stops interacting with content, the banner reappears — unless the user has reached the top or bottom of a page where a true static banner already resides.
“This ad unit brings the mobile adult industry one step closer to rich media,” Ives said. “The [adhesion] format requires an additional ad position to be created on the publisher’s site and is in no way damaging to the already existing ad positions. Results from the testing period indicated a high [click-through] level and above-average publisher earnings.”
