This week’s In the Spotlight will focus on Dave’s website, www.davecummings.com. Since YNOT News focuses on issues towards the adult webmaster, the interview with Dave will focus more on his website experiences rather than his exxxploits as a porn star.
According to Dave, the mission of his site is to “help viewers and the public understand and appreciate that sex between consenting adults (as well as sex with oneself) is indeed natural, normal and healthy!”
Let’s find out how this legend got started in the online adult entertainment industry:
YNOT: How and/or why did you get involved initially in the world of adult online? Dave: To see how I initially entered the Adult Industry, please check out the “Bio” and “An Interview With Dave” at www.davecummings.com . My online “career” began in 1997 when the Exxxtasy Television folks designed and hosted a free site for me, and I was asked to write a monthly “insiders look” column for them. I saw the Internet as a huge and growing medium where I could push for free speech while also “preaching” my message about sex being a good thing for adults.
YNOT: What type of work were you doing, if any, before you started in the biz?
Dave: I’m a Army Lieutenant Colonel who spent 25 years on active duty before entering retired status in 1988. After that, I was a broker specializing in options and futures; then, a Director of Research for a company trading foreign currencies and metals; and, in addition to Adult Industry activities, I’m presently a Senior Loan Officer for a California mortgage company.
YNOT: Where did you begin gathering info about the business and when did you get your start in the online adult industry what types of sites and/or targeted business did you start with?
Dave: In 1997, I started with a small “davecummings” free site. I started my own personal site as a free niche site for all those folks like me who are not the “perfect 10” in appearance and/or age, but who enjoy sex/fantasies and might like to have someone (like me) to sort of “represent” them.
YNOT: Where did you begin gathering info about the business?
Dave: When it became apparent to me that the initial free site was demanding a lot of my personal time and involvement answering emails from viewers and fans, I realized that there might be a demand for someone like me on the Internet, thus I decided to explore the possibility of expanding the site in such a way as to keep a VERY large free/guest’s portion along with a membership portion. That’s when I took a Learning Annex course from Jeff Miller. He and I clicked, especially about ethics and honesty, so we teamed up! Jeff also owns/operates other ventures, while I also own/operate Dave Cummings Productions, INC. Presently, I “own” approximately 200 “porn” domain names which will be up and operating in a few months, and Jeff and I will soon have my niche MPEG’s and streaming video available for webmasters who might want them for their viewers—6,000 minutes are already encoded, and I have much more ready for encoding, accumulated from my shoots over the past 8-9 months, as well as presently ongoing shoots!
YNOT: Give us your thoughts on how easy or difficult it was for you to get started.
Dave: Getting started initially was easy, as all I had to do was supply a couple hundred shoot photos, a monthly column, and answers to emails. Later, I was inundated with emails, and a demand to expand and “represent” the ‘non-perfect’ guy. Teaming up with Jeff Miller allowed me to focus upon creating content and interacting with viewers and fans, while he handled almost everything else.
YNOT: What changes would you like to see made in the adult Internet industry?
Dave: To keep the potential for government scrutiny down, I’d like to see some of the more radical sites tone it down somewhat!
YNOT: What do you love about the adult Internet industry?
Dave: The fun we have helping our members/viewers and the public enjoy sex!
YNOT: What do you dislike?
Dave: I dislike password sites.
YNOT: Any funny stories you’d like to share about the business?
Dave: Yes, a couple! At one show, a retired Army 1st SGT came up to the booth for an autograph and photo and to tell me to keep up the “plugging”, as he and many other military folks think that I give new meaning to one of their favorite phases, namely “THOSE F***ING OFFICERS!!!! I laughed so hard at the way he said it that I had tears flowing down my cheeks!
While being a “guest lecturer” at a recent college course in Human Sexuality (at one time in my military career, I was on the Staff and Faculty at West Point, so classrooms are familiar to me), one of the women told me that she was angry with me because my site had so much free stuff in the guest’s section that her boyfriend would sometimes rather look at the girls on www.davecummings.com than make out with her! She was serious; her boyfriend needs to give her some “action”!.
Groupy girls—they send me emails, letters, and photos asking to meet me for sex. Now, let’s face it, I’m 61 years old, bald, overweight, and far from good looking—either the girls are blind, weigh 300+ pounds, or have no standards! Surprisingly, some have been stunningly gorgeous, and were fantastic sex partners! Most are into wanting to have sex with a porn star, especially one who is of the age that reminds them of a “crush” they once had on their former high school English teacher, a neighbor, their boss, etc.
YNOT: What are your thoughts on the future of the adult Internet industry?
Dave: With our right to free speech comes some innate responsibilities; if we don’t over-step our bounds, our incomes will soar while we provide much needed entertainment to mankind!
YNOT: Where do you see yourself in one year? Five years?
Dave: The answer to both these questions: Doing the same thing I now do now!
YNOT: If you had one bit advice you could offer new webmasters, what would it be?
Dave: Because of the glut of sites, find a niche and fill it! And, remember to NEVER step close to the line that divides pornography from obscenity.
