Hustler Revives Controversy with Debut of ‘Girls’ Parody
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Girls is a magnet for controversy. The HBO series has been both praised as high art that realistically portrays the 20-something experience in New York City and panned as a vulgar mess glorifying awkward, drunken behavior by self-absorbed characters.
Perhaps hoping to tip the scales toward the “high-art” side, series creator, head writer, frequent director and star Lena Dunham rushed to express distaste for the very idea that Hustler intended to film a XXX-rated Girls parody.
“I wish I had a better attitude about the Girls porn parody,” she tweeted May 23.
Hours later, she took to Twitter again with two ostensibly artistic reasons why the Hustler project “grossed her out”:
1. Because Girls is, at its core, a feminist action while Hustler is a company that markets and monetizes a male’s idea of female sexuality.
2. Because a big reason I engage in (simulated) onscreen sex is to counteract a skewed idea of that act created by the proliferation of porn.
This from a woman who incorporates nudity and kinky “(simulated)” sex into almost every episode of her award-winning cable TV dramedy.
As might be expected, Hustler took Dunham’s comments and ran with them. On Monday, the studio debuted This Ain’t Girls XXX online two weeks ahead of the DVD and Blu-ray street date. To promo the new title, and presumably increase Hustler.com website traffic, the studio resurrected Dunham’s Twitter snit, even though most people had forgotten the original incident.
Ironically, the publicity probably will spur viewership for both the porn parody and the mainstream show it skewers, which HBO renewed for a third season set to begin in early 2014.
Directed by Stuart Canterbury, This Ain’t Girls XXX stars Alex Chance as Hannah (played by Dunham in the HBO series), Adriana Chechik as Marnia and Richie Calhoun as Adam. Sierra Day, Florence Dolce and Mia Gold play supporting roles.
According to those familiar with the project, about the only difference between HBO’s Girls and the porn parody is that the hardcore sex in the latter isn’t “(simulated).”
“The cast did a fantastic job in this film,” Canterbury said. “Alex and Richie were the perfect actors for these roles, and the sex scenes from all of the talent are hot.”
Webmasters may promote This Ain’t Girls XXX and Hustler’s other productions through Hustler Cash, which pays as much as $40 per sign-up or up to 65-percent recurring revenue share.
