MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — Porn sites may be popular, but Reuters reports that Mozilla kicked a record number of virtual asses last Wednesday, when the Firefox 3.0 release of its open-source Web browser became available for download.So popular is the new browser that its first 24 hours earned a Guinness World Record for the largest number of software downloads within that period of time.

The winning number was 8 million, according to an official Mozilla statement.

Firefox 3, which includes pumped up security that permits users to run Web sites even when not connected to the internet, is pitted against browser king, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, and Apple’s Safari browers. The ambitious Mozilla has its eyes on an ever increasing percentage of Microsoft’s market share. For its money, the software giant introduced its still in development IE 8 last April in Las Vegas.
