Growing Niches from Love of the Material
By Peter Berton
LOS ANGELES – Sometimes it seems like everyone and their dog is making porn. (I mean, really: Have you seen the prosumer digital camera the neighbor’s golden lab has?)
That’s why niched content is so hot. The tighter the niche, the smaller the market, but pinpointed consumers tend to be high on loyalty to brand they really enjoy.
Content producer Anatomik Media discovered that startling truth early. Today the company produces material for fans of tattooed/alternative performers, art and erotica, amateurs, ex-girlfriends, female domination and public nudity. The company’s approach is fresh and different.
Dan and Rhiannon are the husband-and-wife team at the heart of Anatomik Media. They’ve operated their small-but-lively studio in Los Angeles since 2002.
YNOT.com: Why did you start Anatomik Media?
Dan and Rhiannon: We started out with our own fetish pay site, Sinister Chixxx. We both had a background in photography, so we thought it would be fun to create content of Rhiannon and do a webcam show every weekend. Models started contacting us and wanting to be part of the site, so the idea kind of grew from there. Unfortunately, the site was short-lived — but the company took off in a new direction.
Why did you target the niches you did?
We started with what we knew and built on that. We were into the fetish scene and tattooed girls, so it seemed natural to start there. Since then we have been producing a wide variety of fetishes; latex, Femdom, panty stuffing, adult baby and diaper lovers, and feet. Lately, we have produced a lot of MILF, ex-girlfriend and amateur content for clients.
Some of those niches contain quite a bit of competition. What makes your content stand out?
We like to think we’re unique in our approach. Many clients come to us because they see something different in our work. They want us to come up with something unique for them, so we are able to do many client projects our own way, which we love. We try to create sets that can’t be copied easily.
Also, as a producer it’s important to know what you’re doing. Each niche is so specific, and getting things wrong isn’t an option. We feel that a lot of producers gloss over some of the finer details to do it cheaper, faster — or they’re just not thinking. We try to avoid cutting corners and pay close attention to the specifics that put scenes over the top.
Until recently, we did mainly commissioned projects. Most of our work has been exclusive custom material for fetish websites.
What’s the secret to creating great content?
Planning and organization. Attention to detail, rapport and not missing those magic moments when things happen unexpectedly.
You’re a husband-and-wife team. Does that help or hinder your business?
As partners, we’re pretty much in sync with the direction we want to go and how we work together on each project. We have the time to come up with plans and concepts together. We’re both skilled in the exact opposite areas of our business, and that really helps keep everything running smoothly.
On the downside, disagreements in the workplace can sometimes carry over to the home life!
What have you learned that could aid others who produce adult content?
From our experience, it pays to do things the right way and your own way. Be adaptable and grow into your own thing, but don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
Learn something from every shoot, no matter how small. Target your favorite niches first.
What are your future plans?
Lately we’ve been putting a lot of work into our first feature-length, softcore DVD showcasing classy and beautiful alternative girls. Each scene centers on a particular fetish: wrestling, latex, tickling and more. We may be looking for a distributor when that comes out. It’s slated to be available in August, and we’re really excited about it.
