German Court Shows No Love for “Love Witch”
MUNICH — After her Love Potion No. 9 failed to conjure love, lust, or even like in the object of its buyer’s desire, a German woman who bills herself as a “love witch” learned the hard way that breaking up is not only hard to do, it can also be expensive. In this case, the expense was a $1,300 refund for the love spell that failed and “several hundred euros” in court costs.
At issue was the work performed by the aforementioned “love witch” after she had been hired by a lovelorn woman who had been dumped by her boyfriend. Unable to entice him back with her own magic, she turned to the “love witch,” who promised to perform a ritual under the full moon guaranteed to bring her lover back to her arms.
When that failed, she sought legal redress. According to Munich district court representative Ingrid Kaps “The plaintiff was in despair after her boyfriend left and tried to get him to return with help from a woman who calls herself a ‘love witch.’ The court has ruled it was a service that was ‘objectively impossible’ to render.”
The elderly witch argued that she had never offered a money-back guarantee to the heartbroken femme fatale, and appealed the judgment — once again indicating a lack of foresight, for the court once again ruled against her.
In a vote of obvious no-confidence, the court concluded that “A love ritual is not suited to influence a person from long distance. As the promised service could not be rendered, the plaintiff is not obligated to pay.
No comments are on record about the court’s views on the effectiveness of close-range love rituals.
