to do with each other? What is it that makes governments want to get
involved in the private sex lives of their citizens? In this day and age, is
it not time that we made the very distinct separation between state and sex?
I was amazed to hear this week that Georgia had repealed a law that made
anal sex illegal. I am amazed that any state or any government had the gall
to legislate what two people can and cannot do in the privacy of their own
bedroom. While they did have some sort of forward thinking moment there when
they repealed the law, the plain fact that it had to be repealed is
ridiculous.
How about Tennessee? Illegal to either give or receive oral sex. What kind
of depraved redneck would make blowjobs against the law? Missouri and South
Carolina too, as well as other states below. Is this the result of repressed
ultra right wing religious thinking? Where do these sorts of laws come from?
And then there is Arkansas, while not outright outlawing oral sex, has
equated it with sodomy, making it an undesirable act.
Florida gets in on the fun with a law stating that the missionary position
is the only one allowed – meaning you can go to jail for doing it
doggy-style. What? But then again, this is the same state where it is
considered an offence to shower naked. Smart thinking there. And yet again,
our old friend cunilingus can land you in prison, as can kissing your wife’s
breasts. Thank god they put the word wife in there, or we might have baby
boys serving time for breast feeding!
Good old Mississippi will arrest you simply for having an erection in
public… old nuns and kittens, old nuns and kittens… But seriously, this
is the same state that will fine or jail you for living, or having sex, with
someone you are not married to. “Unnatural intercourse,” whatever the hell
that means, can lend you 10 years in the big house. And then there are the
various laws regarding the teaching of polygamy, lying to seduce (would that
not be every guy in every bar in the state?) and having illegitimate
children.
WHY?
I think part of the problem must be that a lot of people, especially those
in positions of power, are not comfortable with their own sexuality. It
seems that they think that good boys and girls don’t have anal sex, don’t go
down on each other, don’t do it any other way than missionary, etc. Since
society (or at least the vocal part) claims that only the dirty and nasty
people do these sorts of things, admitting to liking such activities, or
even being curious about them, can tarnish your pristine reputation.
It is when lawmakers and legislative member get so caught up in this
outdated mode of thinking that they make certain acts illegal. They don’t
want to do it, or think that it is dirty, so they outlaw it and legislate
punishments. It is the way of the small mind, to attempt to crush or block
anything that does not agree with a certain mindset.
What is so stupid is that these activities are not uncommon. Look at the
many websites, read the adult magazines – they are chock full of textual and
pictorial depictions of all of these so-called illegal acts. Thus, we know
that people are engaging in these “forbidden” activities. Hell, they might
even be enjoying it. People are becoming more comfortable with their
sexuality and exploring just what it means and they are doing it in a
variety of ways. These people are not degenerates, they are nice, normal
folks who we hold up as examples of what good citizens are.
So why does the government continue to poke its nose into places it does not
belong? How long are these arcane laws going to be around? When will two
consenting adults be able to enjoy whatever brand of sexuality they prefer
without fear of arrest and imprisonment?
Or is it that the judicial system is happy to keep people using sex only for
procreation and not enjoying the wide variety of pleasures available to
them? And since these archaic lawmakers want to keep that idea going, they
make sexual acts illegal. They want to make sure that we never have to worry
about having “impure thoughts”.
I guess their way of thinking is that the cell is mightier than the libido!
