FrontPage F*ck-Ups – And What To Do About Them
right
It’s no secret: I love Microsoft FrontPage! Ok. I know many of you have just fallen out of your chairs, while others will doubtless agree with me. Perhaps I should’ve said that I love to hate it…
The following are two of the biggest problems I have found, and the workarounds necessary to overcome them. Fixing these problems might require you to edit the source code by hand, clicking on the “HTML” view tag at the bottom of the editor window. To make sure that the code you have (or modified) remains intact, you must choose Tools > Page Options > HTML Source from your main menu and select the “Preserve existing HTML” radio button. This ensures that the changes you make are not “fixed” again when you save that page. Let’s begin:
Malformed URLs
This to me is the biggest problem for adult webmasters using FrontPage – the software tends to change ampersands (the “&” character) into the “proper” HTML code (&). Big deal you say? Isn’t that the right way to code an ampersand?
Yes it is, but have you checked your sponsor’s link codes? Many of the more complicated ones contain ampersands, that when “fixed” by FrontPage, cause your link to become malformed – and while the sponsor may still get the traffic, you won’t get the credit because the “&” chokes their script! If your sales have been disappointing, this may be the reason why! I can just see some of you now, scrambling in horror to check your source code!
