You sign up with the hosting service, spend hours and hours studying the secrets and strategies of the search engines, and begin the never-ending task of submitting to the engines with links to your new free hosted site…
You do everything the right way and begin getting lots of hits. You work harder and harder at getting your site noticed and it finally pays off as your hits grow and grow… You have a “Job well done” smile on your face after all of the hard work you put into getting this traffic to your site, then a few days later you go to check your site and BOOM! it’s no longer there.
What is there is a site that belongs to the owner of the hosting service, who is more than likely thinking, “Thanks for all of this free traffic!” You contact the owner and ask what the deal is, and if you get a reply at all, it would probably be about his server being down, but it should be back up soon… But you have to ask yourself, “If the server is down, how can his site be up?” The result is: you did lots and lots of hard work, and once your site got the big hits, the owner re-directed them to his site. What an easy way to get lots of traffic with no effort…
Not all are this way, but they are out there, and if you choose to use a free hosting service, you should do so with the above possibility in mind. This is another one of those deals where the few greedy assed host owners make it rough for those who try to do it the right way. Free hosts are free for a reason; the banners that they place on your site are free advertising for them, and the more hits you get as a result of your efforts, the more exposure their banners get. Not too bad of a trade off, with the exception of those that take up the entire top of your page with frames that stay with the visitors even after they leave your site…
Just throw caution to the wind… It does take a little money to get into this business – if you try to do it all for free, you may very well get what you pay for…
