Fox Sends Cease and Desist Over X-Files Porn Parody
CHATSWORTH, Calif. – What do you do when you’re an adult entertainment company and you’re threatened by attorneys from one of the largest media companies in the world over your upcoming parody? Some might call a recent retreat by Digital Sin / New Sensations a simple case of “cut and run,” but most would just call it a sensible business decision. With porn parodies of mainstream TV shows all the rage the past few years, it comes as no surprise that a parody of the popular Fox television show The X-Files has been under development. The upcoming big budget release by Digital Sin / New Sensations was shot entirely with the Red One Digital Cinema Camera, and was to be named “The X-Files: A Dark XXX Parody.”
Using the word “parody” in the title wasn’t enough for Fox, who felt naming the film “The X-Files” was an infringement of their copyright, no matter what came after the colon; a cease-and-desist was dispatched to New Sensations headquarters.
“Digital Sin/New Sensations does not believe that its intended product infringes the rights of Fox,” said the company through a recent press release. “However, in the spirit of cooperation, the company has decided to respond to Fox’s concerns by adapting the title to ‘The Sex Files: A Dark XXX Parody,’ removing the website associated with the film and changing the names of the main characters.
Other parodies produced by Digital Sin / New Sensations include spoofs of “The Office”, “Scrubs”, “Seinfeld”, “Friends” and “30 Rock.”
