Fem-Dom Village Hopes to Draw Tourists
CHINA — It sounds like a submissive man’s fantasy world: a village where women rule, men obey, and transgressions are promptly punished. If Chinese tourist authorities have their way, this dream will become a reality — and make locals prosperous as well as empowered and orderly. Before this land of opportunity can welcome foreigners, however, it needs investors.
According to officials, the small “women’s town” of Longshuihu in the Shuangqiao district of Chongqing municipality operates under local tradition, which follows a “women rule and men obey” value system. The tourist bureau is hoping that an investment of about $26 million in infrastructure, roads, and buildings will make it appealing to visitors.
“Traditional women dominate and men have to be obedient in the areas of Sichuan province and Chongqing,” an official, who only gave the surname of “Li” to Reuters explained. “Now we are using it as an idea to attract tourists and boost tourism. We welcome investors from overseas and nationwide to invest in our project.”
The town of gender role reversals is likely to both delight and offend precisely the kinds of people the ruling party most wishes to discourage, given that traditional Christians will likely not find the area appealing and sex tourists with a love for feminine dominance may well find it nearly irresistible.
The town’s new motto of “Women never make mistakes, and men can never refuse women’s requests” is certainly likely to spark many a fevered Western imagination.
Begun in 2003 and expected to take three to five years to complete, the project features such attractions as female tourists taking charge during shopping excursions and lodging selection. Any man unwise enough to resist a woman’s wishes or express commands would rue their actions after being forced to spend time “kneeling on an uneven board” or washing dishes in a restaurant.
